Steven Tucker was trying to make way for Rick Hunter who was in the Rising Star cave.  He stumbled across a crack that he only heard about and made his way through the narrow crevice.  After nearly twelve metres and an eighteen centimetre wide tunnel, they walked into a chamber and found bones scattered on the floor.  They went back a week later, took pictures and sent it to a geologist, Pedro Boshoff who then notified paleontologist, Lee Berger about the discovery.

This expedition results took three years.  Research was completed by a large team of fifty-two scientists.  Critics are sceptic about how Homo Naledi disposed of their dead.  Aurore Val (former student of Berger), mentions that the fossils age has not been determined yet.  She continues to mention that analyses has not been thorough enough to determine how the remains got there.  It could have been brought in by water or carnivores.  Some of the caves were smaller than twenty centimetres, so the question was: “why would Homo Naledi make this dangerous mission to dispose their dead?”  Researches however believe that it is because of its inaccessibility that makes the cave a tomb.

The finding of a skeleton and a skull that has been perfectly preserved, has made this an extraordinary discovery.  Berger believes that the ongoing material that will be excavated, should be well preserved for future generations.  He also believes that a new era of discovery is just beginning.  The original fossils will be put on display at the Maropeng Visitors’ Centre, Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Centre from 25 May 2017.  This exhibit will be the largest ever display of original fossil hominin material.
