6.1 What is digital socialisation? How can social media change communities and their practices and traditions?
Digital Socialisation
is the way people communicate on the internet.
It is like a community where millions of people are connected from all
over the world.
Culture is formed
through communication and interactions with each other and its continuously
evolving. Digital media is increasing so
much that it is impacting on how we do things.
The impacts of digital
socialisation are:
- · Commodification
This
is where traditions are reduced to ‘showcases’ to the global audience.
- · Staged Effect
These
rituals lose their value as they become materialised.
- · Acculturation
In
digital context, it is when one culture is exposed to another, e.g. a tourism
video being shown to another culture. It
does not need human interaction.
- · Behaviour
Multitasking
has taken over, where people are checking their emails, listening to music and
catching up with friends on social media.
This type of work play results in a frantic type of lifestyle.
- · Privacy
Sharing
things online, e.g. weekend activities, takes away our privacy.
- · Crime
The
internet has made it very easy for criminals to find potential victims.
