Hazards of online activity and Guidelines on online safety
1. Protection for devices from malware and hackers:
Protect your devices by using antivirus software and this needs to be updated on a regular basis.
2. Protect your information:
Extra precaution should be taken to protect your information. Back-up your information on
physical devices (hard drive / server) and on secure cloud. Students should avoid eating and
drinking when using a computer to avoid spillage on the device.
3. Creating and maintaining secure passwords:
Use secure passwords by using numeric, symbols, alphas, etc to make it impossible to hack.
4. Protecting sensitive files on your computer:
Use extra precaution to protect sensitive data by having a multi-layer defense such as
firewalls, anti-spam, anti-spyware, etc.
5. Keeping your internet communication private:
By having VPN (Virtual Private Network), it will protect your online communications from
being stolen or hacked.
6. How to remain anonymous and bypass censorship on the internet:
In some countries, the internet usage is controlled and monitored which limits the
users education, the ability to inform and freedom of speech, eg. Middle Eastern Countries.
7. Protecting yourself and your data on social media platforms:
Practice some of these guidelines below.
- Ask yourself, who can access my information;
- Use secure passwords;
- Check your default privacy settings;
- Be vigilant on how you save your content; and
- Delete passwords and browsing history content on public hardware.
8. How to use mobile phones as securely as possible:
Cellphones are designed to give out information about its location. Practice some of these
guidelines below.
- Protect your SIM and memory card;
- Back-up your information regularly;
- Use phone locks and PIN's;
- Do not leave your mobile unattended; and
- Know the information stored on your phone.
9. How to use smart phones as securely as possible:
Make sure you switch off notifications, limit tracking and only allow applications that you
need to locate your whereabouts.
